Every day is a work in progress you just have to keep going out there and doing the work. Now, I’ve added a splitter to my repertoire, and I wanted to fine-tune my slider and the curveball. In the past, I’ve always had issues with my off-speed pitches and commanding them. NE: I think you’re always working toward getting better. YM: New Yorkers maybe saw some of your numbers, but hadn’t looked at you as a pitcher. But, more importantly, you just have to go out there and have fun. You always have to stay on guard and keep grinding. NE: It’s taught me that you just have to keep learning and keep developing. YM: It’s your fifth year in the majors and your third team - but you’re only 25 years old. Like you said, you’re facing more power hitters, so your mistakes are magnified - they’re going to make you pay more for your mistakes. NE: It’s true, you feel confident, but you still have to go out there and compete. When you’re locating your pitches and then you look behind you and see that your fastball is up there in velocity, what kind of confidence boost does that give you? YM: In moving to the American League, you’ve had to face even more power hitters. If you’re locating all your pitches, you’re going to have a fun time out on the mound. So if I’m locating my off-speed pitches well, they have to worry about more than just the fastball. Having it changes everything else up and opens up other possibilities. NE: The hitters always have to be on guard for the fastball. What advantage does that power give you over opposing hitters? So even if it’s a hard fastball, if it’s not well-located, it’s going to get hit. These batters are up here in the majors because they can hit a fastball. Especially when off-speed pitches come into play. YM: Especially knowing that your velocity will diminish over the years, how important is it for you to perfect your location now, while you still have the power fastball? No matter how hard you throw, if you have a well-located pitch, you’re in good shape. NE: I just feel that if you locate a pitch, you’ll be able to get a guy out. YM: But what’s more important, velocity or location? In that sense, it’s comforting when you can look back and see that you’re throwing hard. I use my fastball a lot, so I sort of rely on it. YM: How does velocity play into your strategy as a pitcher? In the minor leagues, I had done it a few times, but it’s just not the same feeling until you’re in the big leagues and it’s official and you actually see it. Nathan Eovaldi: In the majors, I think it was when I first got called up by the Dodgers in 2011 and I got called out of the bullpen to pitch against the Diamondbacks. When and where did you hit triple digits for the first time? Yankees Magazine: It’s fair to say that your velocity accelerated your progression to the majors.
